So you've gotten yourself your first surfboard and your excited to get out there and catch a sweet wave. But before you can even surf on that board you're gonna need to wax it first. Wax is what keeps you on the board, its sticky and keeps your feet on the board when doing tricks or even when you're just surfing. There are too many kinds of surf wax to list so I'm going to recommend two of the best, Mr. Zog's Sex Wax and Sticky Bumps. I personally use Sticky Bumps as my basecoat, a basecoat is the layer of wax underneath the wax you're standing on, so its the bottom layer. After you have picked out a basecoat wax you need to figure out the temperature of the water in which you'll be surfing in. There are different kinds of wax for different temps: cold, cool, warm, and tropical. Once you've bought a few bars of your basecoat and top layer than you need to put it on. There really isn't much to rubbing wax on a board, just rub a lot if it's your first time. After you got a decent layer of basecoat on then you need to apply your top layer, the temperature wax. Be sure to spread it on the whole board and then extra on the spots where your feet will be. I like to spread some wax on the part of the board where your hands will be gripping to dive under waves. Once all that wax is spread on your board you are gonna need a surf comb or a regular haircomb. Use the comb to make diagonal lines in the wax and repeat direction once you cover the whole board, when you're done it should look like there is a diamond pattern in the wax. And there you go, your board is waxed and you're ready to get out there and catch some killer surf. |
